The College Selection Process: How to Make the Final Decision

When it comes to making the final selection on which college you'd like to attend, you will probably see that making a decision is not as easy as you originally thought it would be. For those students that are accepted to every school that they apply to, the decision can be even harder to make.

When making the final decision in the college selection process, if you are having difficulty making that decision there are some basic elements of your college experience that you should keep in mind that might help you in narrowing it down to at least a final few.

Location

Consider whether you are willing to go far away to school. If you are one of those people who have separation anxiety or are very close to one or more members of their family, chances are that the colleges that are far away, whether it be out of town or out-of-state, just will not work for you. Will you do well in school if you are far away from your already established comfort zone? The answer varies from student to student, it is one thing that is important to consider. If the answer is no, chances are that you have narrowed down your list of colleges quite significantly.

Academics

Which of the schools on your list have the better rate of graduation? Which ones have the most successful programs out of what it is that you want to study? Consdier what will be best not only for your college experiencebut your professional career. Academics is, afer all, what college is about.

Cost

When deciding what college you want to go to out of those that you were accepted to, take a look at the financial aid packages that each and every one offered you. Those that offer more in grants and scholarships should probably be a bit higher on your list and those that require you to borrow a great deal of money in order to attend should probably be scratched off for good, unless of course it happens to be the college of your dreams. The more economical college is not always going to be the one that wins, but when it comes time to pay those student loans back five years down the line you might wish you had chosen the cheaper option.

Get Advice

Talk to somebody about what you are going through. This is not an easy decision, and it is what counselors, teachers, and even parents are here for. It is always nice to get another perspective and an honest, unbiased opinion from someone you respect.

Your Heart

If you made it this far, chances are that you have put a great deal of time and effort into getting into college. While there are many factors that can play in to what college you should and should not choose, chances are that you are not going to do very well in a school that you never wanted to go to in the first place. There are many important factors in the college selection process, but your success should be first and foremost.
