Interviews: Getting To Know You and Your Abilities
While not every college requires that their applicants go through a personal interview, some of them do. Bigger names like Yale and Harvard are known to put their applicants through a rigorous application process in order to get to know their applicants as much as possible and determine whether or not they will be a fit to their institution. In order to pass your personal interview with flying colors, here are some things that you might need to know and keep in mind at all times.
Be Real
College entrance officials can see right through a fake applicant. Do not go behind those doors and pretend to be something that you are not. The fact that you got the interview alone proves that you know at least one thing or another, so let the fact that you have scored an interview give you confidence in the abilities that you do have, not give you a chance to make up abilities that you don't and put up a façade.
Have Important Documents on Hand
Have on hand what they ask you to have at the time of your interview. Many of the interviewers want to have this information so that they have a point of reference to look to during your interview. They make ask for a copy of your application or even a resume; whatever they ask for, make sure to have it! This is a test in itself.
Speak Clearly, Be Succinct
The purpose behind having a personal interview is because the interviewer wants to gauge your communication skills and see how much of your college application is the real deal. Put consideration into questions they ask you, and make sure you are clear of the answer before you start speaking.
Calm Down
Be sure to be as calm as possible during your interview. If you get all nervous and excited, that won't do anything but hurt your situation so make sure that you breathe and calm down before you enter the room. This will help to keep your head as clear as possible and that is essential for a successful interview.
The personal interview is an important part of the application process, but it is not everything. Be sure to put as much effort into it as you can, but don't put all your eggs into one basket and rely on your interview to get you through.
